A conceptual solo dance theatre performance about identity, conformity and the commodification of bodies
Leftover Market, by Chiayi-based multimedia artist Su Pin-wen, is an immersive, participatory work of dance theatre that explores contemporary notions of gender, identity and the market value of individuals.
Inspired by the expression “Leftover Women” — a derogatory term commonly used in Chinese-speaking cultures to label females who have reached the age of twenty-seven and are still single — the abstract, non-conformist work looks at the commodification and sexualisation of female bodies from a feminist perspective. Using his physical form as medium, Su combines personal experience and social observation to re-examine patriarchal labels and capitalist economic norms. In an intimate, immersive space, the artist wordlessly interacts with the audience and discarded objects — sometimes humorously, sometimes caustically — exploring gender and body politics beyond labels and beneath the hair, to the tune of Western and Asian pop.
